On Big Bang Relics, the Neutrino Mass and the Spectrum of Cosmic Rays

چکیده

It is shown that high-energy features of the cosmic ray spectrum, in particular the kink around 4 PeV and the corresponding change in spectral index, may be explained from interactions between highly energetic cosmic protons and relic Big Bang antineutrinos, if the latter have a rest mass of about 0.4 eV/c. This explanation is supported by experimental data from extensive air-shower experiments, and in particular by the observation (Fly’s Eye) of a second kink around 300 PeV, and by the abrupt change in the chemical composition of the cosmic ray spectrum that occurs at that energy. Both facts follow naturally from our theory, which predicts additional verifiable features of the cosmic ray spectrum in the few-PeV region, e.g. an abrupt decrease in the p/α ratio.

Neutrino Masses in Astroparticle Physics

The case for small neutrino mass differences from atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillation experiments has become compelling, but leaves the overall neutrino mass scale mν undetermined. The most restrictive limit of mν < 0.8 eV arises from the 2dF galaxy redshift survey in conjunction with the standard theory of cosmological structure formation. A relation between the hot dark matter fraction...

Can high energy neutrino annihilation on relic neutrinos generate the observed highest energy cosmic-rays?

Annihilation of high energy, ∼ 10eV, neutrinos on big bang relic neutrinos of ∼ 1eV mass, clustered in the Galactic halo or in a nearby galaxy cluster halo, has been suggested to generate, through hadronic Z decay, high energy nucleons and photons which may account for the detected flux of > 10eV cosmic-rays. We show that the flux of high energy nucleons and photons produced by this process is ...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE The Highest Energy Neutrinos

Measurements of the arrival directions of cosmic rays have not revealed their sources. High energy neutrino telescopes attempt to resolve the problem by detecting neutrinos whose directions are not scrambled by magnetic fields. The key issue is whether the neutrino flux produced in cosmic ray accelerators is detectable. It is believed that the answer is affirmative, both for the galactic and ex...

High-energy end of the cosmic-ray spectrum has provided us to check a validity of the Lorentz Invariance and the Relativity principle, through the observation of the so-called GZK cutoff. It is claimed in this report that the comoving reference frame in the expanding universe might define the preferable inertia frame, in contradiction to the relativity principle. If the present universe has bee...

Dark Energy from Mass Varying Neutrinos

We show that mass varying neutrinos (MaVaNs) can behave as a negative pressure fluid which could be the origin of the cosmic acceleration. We derive a model independent relation between the neutrino mass and the equation of state parameter of the neutrino dark energy, which is applicable for general theories of mass varying particles. The neutrino mass depends on the local neutrino density and ...
